My body, My Voice, My Choice
It’s been a while since I posted. I had locked myself up in a cocoon, anxiously biting my nails and waiting for election day. Until the inevitable happened, and I felt like I was hit by a rock bigger than the Titanic. At that moment, I wished I could take a sleeping pill that would last for the next four years. Because I was scared.
Like millions of people in America and around the globe, I couldn’t believe that hate had won, and it was pretty damn scary. Not only was I scared because our civil liberties were at stake, but as a veiled, Muslim woman, I was scared for my life. Frightened by the ignorance, racism, and hate that led people to commit hate crimes against all people who looked like me, and against all minority groups in the aftermath of the elections. So I crawled back into my cocoon, without an alarm clock to wake me up.
But all of that changed yesterday. Yesterday, I realized that I had a voice and I stepped out into the streets of San Francisco and joined thousands of people and voices just like mine. This encouraged me to speak again, not just to Muslim women, but to everyone that is scared that hate will bring us down. We must use that fear and turn it into love. I realized last night that there is more love than hate and that hate didn’t win. We can’t be afraid. We need to tackle that fear and look back at history and remind ourselves that hate never won. I will continue doing what I’m passionate about and use my love of fashion to express myself as a Muslim woman. And I made a vow not to succumb to fear and to make my voice loud and clear.
On the bright side, I got this jacket on sale (as usual). Most of the pieces from this outfit (T-shirt, pants, sneakers) can be found in most women’s closets. If you’re looking for comfort and style, you can never go wrong with a jean jacket and a bold purse. Those are the only two pieces that stand out in this outfit.
I bought this purse from the Coach Outlet for only $99. Outlets are the best source to buy designer brands at an affordable price, and still won’t compromise quality. The purse is the only part I spent a little more on because I personally love the Coach and its quality. I love bold colors so once I saw it I knew it would make any simple outfit stand out.
I like when jean jackets are worn with solid pants because the jacket stands out more. I chose to wear cropped pants I bought from H&M for only $14.99. H&M has a great selection of cropped and regular solid pants in any color.
So if you’re going out with the girls or on a casual date night, throw on some sneakers, a jean jacket with your pretty purse and you’re all set!
